The Urban Sophisticates
The Urban Sophisticates have been my favorite band for a while now. They do live hip hop, with a seven piece band including a horns section. The horns are their signature, and give them a really funky sound. Its unlike anything else out there really. Their front man, Benton James, has an amazing flow, is often very clever and introspective with his rhymes, and his voice is so smooth. They have so far released 2 albums, The Urban Sophisticates and The Cowards Anthem, both of which are fantastic. Recently they won a large cash prize for being an outstanding independent band, and are now hard at work on a new album. Most exciting: their album features production from Nicolay. All I know is, I cannot wait for this album to come out. In the mean time, check out the video, and their myspace. Make sure and listen for them in the Mental Mixes, they’ve been in there once before, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they show up again.
