Chaos Kids X Black Kids (Pt. 1)

No. No collabo is in the works (yet). But we did manage to hit up the Mobius Band/Black Kids/Cut Copy show last night. And the amazing after party. Thanks to Washington DC, for reminding me how dope you are, and by comparison, how wack Saint Louis can be. There is so much to be told, I might have to break it into a few parts. Plus, I’m completely skipping over the Designer Drugs and RRRump show of the night before, which was also a great time. All in good time my friends, all in good time. This just could not wait.

So here it goes. We arrive at the Black Cat, pick up our tickets, and head upstairs to the mainstage. The show is sold out, but no one is supposed to go on stage for about 45 minutes, so we decide to chill in the back, on the couches. We get situated, and wait until finally, the Mobius Band comes on stage. They were good. Not great, but definitely good. It seemed as though they had not had time to fully do a sound check, because some of the sounds were out of balance. Other than that, they could have given a great performance.

Next, the Black Kids. Not much is known about them. They came to fame via music blogs, with a 4 track EP, The Wizard of Ahhs. Since then, everyone has been anxiously awaiting the release of their first full length album. The band is comprised of five members and is based out of Jacksonville Florida (The Jacksonville 5!). Reggie Youngblood on guitar and vocals, Owen Holmes on bass, Kevin Snow on drums, Dawn Watley on keyboards and vocals, and Reggie’s sister Ali Youngblood also on keyboards and vocals. The result is a beautiful Disco/Pop/Indie/New Wave sound that is unique, fresh, but incredibly relevant to todays music scene. Very great music. And they are amazing live. The band members seem so easy going, and upbeat, you can tell they very much enjoy their music. And they should, because its excellent. This was the best performance of the night (sorry Cut Copy).

Finally, Cut Copy took stage. Fresh from their 2007 (2008 in the states) release, In Ghost Colors, this Australian electronic outfit had a great selection of relatively new material to draw from. And they did so brilliantly. Pulling mostly (if not entirely) from the new record, the 4 man band kept the crowd moving the entire time. And not just head bobbing, maybe a knee bend here and there; the crowd was literally jumping up and down for their entire set. The energy was incredible. And so was the music. It was an incredible performance, and a great experience.

Although the night did not end there, that’s where part 1 does. But keep your eyes peeled for the review of the afterparty, featuring performances by the districts finest, DJ Cale, and DJ Will Eastman. The party was crazy, so get ready.  But for now…

peace,
