Planet B-Boy… Finally

I made a post on the site, a long time ago with the trailer for the movie Planet BBoy.

The trailer had me mad excited, but I never got to see the movie until Tuesday. and I must say, after all that waiting, all that anticipation, the movie lived up to the hype. It was great. It was the first hip hop documentary I have ever seen that took an international look at the culture, and explored both the similarities and differences that hip hop has taken on over the world.

The film traces 5 bboy crews as the prepare for and compete in the Battle of the Year, the largest international bboy crew contest. The 5 teams represented the biggest names in breaking from around the world: America, France, Korea (x2) and Japan. (Ichigeki was too ill.) The movie gave some back story, introduced most of the dancers of the crews, and showcased them all dancing. It did a great job of pointing out the different styles and how representative they were of the country it came from. The Koreans are all about power moves, the Americans are great battlers, the Japanese are innovative choreographers, and the French are an amazing balance of technique and showmanship.

The movie did a great job of keeping the focus on breakdancing, and how the visual components of the hip hop culture have consistently been more at the forefront in the international scene and why. The movie included interviews with Ken Swift and Mr. Freeze of the legendary Rock Steady Crew to keep things in perspective. The movie did a great job exploring the culture through an international lens, and made some great observations. Not to mention, the dancing is amazing. These are the best crews in the world. Definitely worth checking out if it’s coming through your city, and keep your eyes peeled for news on a DVD release.
