I AM AMERICA AND SO CAN YOU
So… today I led a class through a discussion about music. The topic given to me to speak on (which I didn’t totally understand until maybe 45 minutes before the class started. yay me!) was music of America. More specifically, music that defines or is defined by America. I decided to give it the slant of “American music tradition, as influenced by Afrikan music traditions.” Basically, I showed a bunch of highschoolers some jazz, soul, funk, and some modern music that had been influenced by it. All this I arranged a hefty 30 minutes before class. (again, yay me!). Unfortunately I forgot how closed-minded a lot of people that age can be about music, and watched, much to my chagrin, as they began to do the “chicken noodle soup” to Issaac Hayes. It was slightly sad. But I liked the mix of stuff I threw together, and thought I ought to pass it along. No harm in that eh? And a few of them were bobbing their heads to the music, so not all is lost.
enjoy!
