The Kid Daytona – The Daytona 500

I’ve been keeping you up to date on this project the last couple weeks, faithfully releasing all the leaks, and the preview video. So you should be ready for this project. If not though, let me lay it out for you. The Kid Daytona is releasing an album, Come Fly With Me, this summer. To prep us for the release, he got everyone who produced on the album (6th Sense, Jet Audio, Double O, Ill Bomb, and The Government) to flip Bob James’ Nautilus for this free EP. Bob James is legendary, and Nautilus is one of the best tracks ever recorded (also one of the most sampled). It’s an ambitious project, but they pulled it off incredibly well. Hit the jump for more thoughts.

One of the biggest challenges of sampling a song like Nautilus is keeping it fresh. What can you bring to the table that hundreds of people before you haven’t already? So to hear 5 different people on back to back taking it and flipping it in creative ways is really refreshing. I have to give a special look to Double O, who I think hands down made the best beat of the bunch. He made the sample almost unrecognizable, yet somehow managed to still capture the vibe of original in many ways. Plus his bass is just straight up dope. No diss to all the other producers, everyone did their thing, but I just gotta give it up to him.

The idea behind the project is brilliant from the standpoint of The Kid Daytona. By keeping the tracks all tied together somehow through the beat, it definitely helps throw him right into the spotlight. The album is themed as the process of building the machine that we’re going to fly in with Daytona. So each track is a different part of the plane. The Wings. The Body. The Engine. The Navigation. And finally, we get to take off. Each symbolically directs the flow of the track. The Kid Daytona definitely impresses both conceptually and lyrically, and leaves me waiting for more. The plane was crafted enticingly enough, and I’m excited to Come Fly With Daytona.
