Bullet – Interview pt. 1

bullet

Judge Mental: You’re in the last stages of the Mr. Robotic EP… tell me what that project is all about?

Bullet: Well I’m 75 Percent done. I thought this project was done i recorded it twice, as in thought i completed it twice. But I want it to be EPIC! It initially started out as The Lost Jabbawockee. But The Jabbawockeez couldn’t be involved with the project because they were touring. So I figured why not just have a title that incorporateds my Brand. I wrote the record “Mr.Robotic” in my room and knew that was going to be the Hit Single for me. And i just based this project around that single.

Judge Mental: What’s the concept?

Bullet: The Concept of this project is basically just to make something EPIC. Like i feel the Pop Genre of music is just Bland! Like thank God for a Kanye or Timbaland/Justin Timberlake or Lady Gaga etc. Like I feel just alot of stuff out there is really Corny! Like our “Superstars” in music i feel like they don’t care anymore. So my Basis around this project is just to be like this is what I want to hear. From the Lyrics to the Sonics of the records. Im not the type to complain about whats on the Radio. If you’re not the solution you’re the problem.

Also, with this project its like of course its a fun record and how im structuring it you do not have to skip a track. Thats what is taking me so long to complete it. The intro of the Project “Stars are out” Basically describes the theme and reasoning behind this project. I feel that alot of people party go to clubs to relieve stress. Take them away from there daily ills of life. Everytime im in the club people are different from how they ACTUALLY are. Alot of people i talk to outside of the club are like sad. They have to pay college loans. They’re working 2 jobs, they having relationship problems. And i think one of the gifts that i was born with is not standing to see anyone sad. Hence the music i make is to make people enjoy themselves without me losing my artistic integrity (word to Wale!)

Judge Mental: The last project we heard from you was Back to the Lyrics, which I really liked. Obviously there’s more of an emphasis on dancing this time around, how did you transition?

Bullet: Well Back to the Lyrics was really strategic for me. The point of that project was basically for the Singles to show that Im Coming with something new. Earth Girls Worked Really well for me. and I called it Back to the Lyrics so that all the top Hip Hop Blogs/Websites would notice me. Earth Girls was more for the “Pop” audience the Album was for “Hip-Hop” Crowd so that way i will be noticed by Both Crowds. But at the same time the pop audience is what i wanted but i wanted it to make it known on my first project that i can actually rap but also can make singles! Which i proved.

Judge Mental: Do you think switching up your style might leave some of the people who were fans of Back to the Lyrics behind?

Bullet: Well not at all. Im not dumbing down anything and also for the fans of Back to the Lyrics if they followed the whole project, First off if you look at the album cover in between the letters its a bunch of planets in there. Which incorporates with my brand.

Then my First Single was “Earth Girls” which got my Buzz on the Net Initially. Because no one was talking about what I was talking about. I was actually kind of nervous putting out that record. But i took the risk and it worked. Then my 2nd Single happened to be produced by Chuck Inglish of the Cool Kids! And i really appreciate him for that. Now Both are those records are the same as the records im putting out now lol! They’re just 2008! So the material im producing now are just those records on a Bigger Scale. I have matured as an artist/songwriter. I practice this and study it everyday.

Judge Mental: You talked a little bit about working with The Cool Kids, you recently leaked a track with Donny Goines… who else are you working with on this project?

Bullet: On production Slot-a and Cory Bold (Keri Hilson-Alienated and Letoya Luckett-She aint got) who have produced this project and i got some BIG records from both of them. Mr.Robotic is doing SUPER well right now and its only the beginning stage for that record. And that is the official Single. Im working on getting some dope collabs for this EP but im really focused on this single right now. But I have worked with Chuck Inglish Christian Rich Donny Goines Add-2 and I got some DOPE collabs coming up soon!

Judge Mental: How did that process work, working with your Main Producer Slot-A so intimately, rather than working with a bunch of different people?

Bullet: Well me and Slot been working together for about 3-4 yrs now. So i mean we make some magic lol! I think working with one person keeps the sound consistent. Like we created our own sound. Its not forced or anything its just us. He provides the soundtrack for my vocals and everytime i write a hook or a melody i just want it to be of something EPIC! I strive for it and i know when he makes a beat he wants it to be EPIC!

Judge Mental: I know you consider some people as influences who are mainly producers and songwriters, rather than rappers. Is that something we’re gonna see show up in the future, or even on this album. You taking the role as more of a producer, or writing melodies.

Bullet: Oh yeah, I wirte melodies. I can’t make beats, . But, I can write dope songs. All the songs that I’ve been doing lately I’ve been trying to find different ways to ride beats, and stuff like that. And I write hooks. If i get stuck Slot is a dope songwriter too and he will come up with the hook . . I’ve really been studying song-writers, and how they write their mateiral and make hit records. So I’m really big on the songwriting process. Very Intriguing to me.

Judge Mental: Who are some of the people you look up to in that regard?

Bullet: I def look up to The Dream And Neyo. I look up to The Clutch which probably are my favorite group of Songwriters. 50 cent is one of the dopest songwriters of our time. People might disagree but his strong structure wins 95 percent of the time. Like he is almost one of the only rappers that actually has bridges in his records as a hip-hop artist.

Judge Mental: You’re from Chicago… in the past few years there’s been a pretty big outflux of really creative music from the Chi. Why do you think that is?

Bullet: Well because i think alot of people here are very eclectic. We are in the middle of alot of amazing music. So we get to listen to stuff from down south from up north out west from the east and surrounding areas. You put all that together and you can pretty much become a musical frankenstein lol! I think certain people here are just really gifted. and the fact that we dont have an industry here it makes our grind harder. So with an undeniable gift that matches your undeniable grind you’re bound to do some damage

Judge Mental: You just talked about being from Jupiter. Why do you think it is that suddenly everyone is talking about how they’re an alien or a Martian?

Bullet: I think because they have nothing real to talk about it. Like people latch on to what they think is that new ish! And they try to make it a trend. Like when the Cool kids came out the music there style was like A Breath of Fresh air. Then all of a sudden everyone and they’re mother is trying to do the same thing. I did Earth Girls because that is a reflection of me. I dont care about the whole alien martian thing. Like i can really talk about that stuff with ease because thats how i really am. Some people just really force it and you can tell by there music. that they are forcing it because its not really them. So I pay no attention to it.

Judge Mental: Why do you feel that you’re not from earth? What makes you feel different?

Bullet: Well, even before I had it in my music, or was doing music, I had it on my facebook and myspace like I was from Jupiter, Illinois. Cause I’m not a gangster rapper, so I don’t fit in that crowd over there. I’m not a hipster, so i dont a fit there. I’m a person, you know? IAnd in Chicago its like so many people want to run this city. I dont think like that whatsoever. Its where im from where i was born. But to me Chicago is just a dot in the world i want to help change. On top of that i feel like if you’re not cliqued up with anyone here its pretty much like you’re not going to get certain things here that they get. Even though i have gotten alot more than most of these people but thats because my focus isn’t here. And i got to a point where i said you know what have Chicago! I rep a planet LOL! and once i got out that Mentality i just became my own person. I really think that helped my maturity level of not being bitter or being upset because im working just as hard if not harder than alot of people. But in the past year i have been getting my just due when i stopped caring. So Jupiter has been great to me lol.

the rest coming soon!

peace,
-the judge

JM, Great interview…I agree with almost everything that Bullet said in this interview. Especially when he commented on the status of music. When he said “The Concept of this project is basically just to make something EPIC. Like i feel the Pop Genre of music is just Bland! Like thank God for a Kanye or Timbaland/Justin Timberlake or Lady Gaga etc. Like I feel just alot of stuff out there is really Corny!” I think I just made a best friend. It’s great to know that there are others that feel the exact same way!
