Poll of the Week: Is Gangster Rap Dead?

gangsta-killers

According to an article entitled “Gangsta Killers” in the latest issue of GQ, “the gangster persona is finally dead, and these are the kids who killed it [Wale, Drake, & Kid Cudi].” That’s a bold statement to say the least. Especially in the same year that Raekwon’s OB4CL2 dropped, and as fans eagerly anticipate The Clipse’s latest work, Til the Casket Drops. But that might just be my opinion… Is the gangster persona dead, or at least on the way out? Or are we simply seeing a return to a more balanced set of content in the mainstream? Hit the poll on the side and let us know what you think. On a sidenote, someone needs to be making sure Drake does not dress like that again.

Yeah, I think that’s the case right now. There’s a lot more variety in the mainstream compared to in 2001-2006. Gangsta rap has taken a huge dip, and it seems a lot of the gangsta rappers are trapped in the “mixtape rapper” status. It was bound to happen though. When the media abuses it (as they did), eventually people will become fed up.

They say gangsta rap is dying. I tend to disagree, it’s just changing forms and merging with new styles. What we’re doing is a prime example. Check out Kryptik – V.I.P Ft. Crooked I, just google it, I don’t wanna spam a link. if far
